ARAKI - LAMENTS POSTCARD

Nobuyoshi Araki is one of the most influential photographers of Japan. He is nowadays mostly known for his nude and bondage photography.

Nowadays, Nobuyoshi Araki is mostly known for his nude and bondage erotic photography, but there were more and different motifs in his art before.

In the early days of his career, Nobuyoshi Araki followed his wife Yoko with the camera, for instance at their honey moon, but also until her death from cancer.

And this leads us to the untitled work of the Laments series, printed on this postcard. 

Flowers, especially orchids with their flowering and dying instinct, adorned the journey from the couple's wedding day to 1991, the year of Yoko`s death. They wilt along a path that Araki described in his famous book of photographs "Sentimental Journey" with an obsession, that you could describe as painful and hollow.

Withered, in the vicinity of the grieving photographer, The flowers that were given to Yoko in the hospital mourn the loss of Araki`s wife.

Only after that, Araki fully devoted himself to the art of nude and bondage photography and embraced it, to become the well-known artist, which he is today.
